Bonsai History
In the history of bonsai trees it is common for people to think that the Chinese started to grow these miniature plants first. Although most bonsai tree’s are called Japanese Bonsai. In Japanese the word Bonsai means “tray planting”. I have read that it is said that the bonsai tree was started back in the Han Dynasty. People found paintings showing what looked like bonsai trees in 1972 in the tomb of Prince Zhang Huai, of the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 A.D.) who died in 706 A.D. Buddhist monks brought the bonsai to the Japanese back in the Heian period (794 - 1191A.D. Today you can buy bonsai tree’s all over the world including here in the United States. How to Grow Bonsai
If you are a beginner bonsai grower than you may be wondering what the best way is on how to grow bonsai. Some of the best starter bonsai tree’s are: Ficus, Japanese Red Maple and the Sea Grape. These are all tree’s that are easy to care for and maintain and need little pruning and trimming. Watering your bonsai tree is a necessity, but does not have to be done daily. Your tree can live very well with watering every few days. In order to keep your tree on the small side you will want to prune as needed. When you tree looks as though it has a good amount of growth you can trim back the limps with special pruning shears. If you take good care of your tree it will last for many many years to come.

Bonsai Styles
There are two basic bonsai styles: classic (koten) and the informal or ‘comic’ (bunjin). With the classic style of bonsai the trunk is the widest and gets narrower towards the top of the tree. With the comic style it is the exact opposite, the trunk is larger at the top and gets smaller towards the bottom. The comic style is harder to accomplish and takes time, patience and a mastering of the bonsai style. Most of the bonsai that you see are the classic style as it is easier to maintain and to take care of.
